A big topic of controversy amongst Freddie fans and Queen fans in general is his sexuality. I thought I'd just make this post compiling some evidence and answering some frequently asked questions!

FAQ and mythbusting:

Was Freddie gay or bi?

Gay

Freddie slept with women too, right?

He never had relations with women again after Mary (and even during his relationship with Mary, he was having an affair with David Minns). I'll add sources down below proving this! During his relationship with Mary, and his previous college girlfriend, he was clearly very uncomfortable and unhappy.

People also bring up Barbara Valentin when it comes to Freddie having relationships with women, but she was nothing more than a beard and a friend to Freddie. Phoebe also said, and I quote: "I know 100% that they shared a bed on numerous occasions, but in that I wasn't sitting in the room, I cannot tell you, yes or no, sex happened. If it had, Freddie could not have been quiet about it".

Also on the topic of Barbara, she also claimed that Freddie tried to kill her twice so I honestly wouldn't trust anything she said. She came out with both the attempted murder accusations AND the claims to have slept with Freddie AFTER he died, so he couldn't defend himself, which is honestly pretty gross to me.

Sources:

  • A great source regarding Freddie's sexuality specifically is the Freddie's Loves documentary (watch here). It's all about his relationships, and includes many close friends speaking on the matter.
  • Thor Arnold, a friend of Freddie's, posted this on Queenzone:

  • This is a quote taken from Freddie Mercury: His Life In His Own Words (a book approved by his mother, Jer):

Some extras:

  • Although I have yet to read it myself, I've heard from friends that Freddie's college girlfriend mentions in her book (see here) two stories in particular. One that Freddie once broke down because he didn't want to sleep with her and he wanted to be with a man (bear in mind that this relationship came before his one with Mary, so I imagine he was dealing with a lot of internalised homophobia at this point in his life). A bisexual person would be comfortable sleeping with a woman, but he wasn't. Another story I've heard about is how Freddie wanted desperately to meet Rose's gay friends, but when he finally got to meet them he just ran off. This seems to be another display of his internalised homophobia. Here is a post about the book:
  • Some quotes from close friends of Freddie's:

"All the girls who fancied Fred just didn't believe he was gay anyway" - Brian May

"He didn't have to shout to demonstrate, he lived gay. If you went anywhere near him or were involved with him, he was gay. He had his boyfriends and he didn't hide it but on the other hand he didn't show off about it" - Diana Moseley

"There were about two occasions in the press where he admitted to being gay. It's there in black and white but people haven't picked up on it" - Peter Freestone

"I think if they knew he was gay, I don't think it would have really made much difference, I don't think he needed to tell them" - Mary Austin

  • And just a random quote, for people who believe Love Of My Life was written for Mary:

Thank you for reading! I have some videos supporting some quotes I included in this post, and if you'd like to see them feel free to message me @mrbadgvy on Twitter. Hope everyone has a fantastic day.
